If Walls Could Talk
wood, 2019
This concept of this piece was inspired by sexual aggression and the stigma surrounding going public with survivor stories.
I asked people on my social media and campus to participate in an anonymous survey and share their sexual aggression story with me. I got 27 responses. From those responses I pulled around 90 quotes for the sculpture. For some, this was the first time they’d told their stories. This sculpture may have quotes from your friend. Your mother. Your teacher. Your sister. Myself. Or even you. Anyone you know could have participated in this survey. And hundreds of people you know have a similar story to share.
This piece gave me an opportunity to give a voice to people who are constantly being quieted. The outside of this dollhouse is beautiful and innocent. You can peek through the windows and see glimpses of the words burned into the walls. Once the viewer opens the doors, they are overwhelmed with quotes, all in different handwriting, covering the walls of each room.
1 in 5 women will be raped in their lifetime. Someone you know has been raped. Someone you know will never tell anyone. Someone you know is being abused. Someone you know was molested as a child. It is our responsibility to be open with our friends so they feel comfortable sharing their stories with us.
We are responsible to take care of each other.
